5 million Pakistanis still suffering from floods: UN
UN agencies have estimated that 5 million Pakistanis are still suffering from this year s floods and about half of the affected are children. A report was carried out and released yesterday. Sindh and Baluchistan were the worst-hit provinces, the report, a joint study by the UN and the Pakistani government, said, adding that 25 per cent of the affected were women. According to the report, almost 8,00,000 homes were destroyed or severely damaged in the floods, which began in August and nearly 7,50,000 people were still displaced at the end of last month. According to a spokesperson for the World Food Program, a UN agency, food rations have so far been distributed to nearly 3 million people. Of the original 133 million dollars, planned to be spent on the affected, only 63 million dollars were made available. The UN Children s Fund said about one-third of affected villages were still under water, and water sources were also contaminated. Marixie Mercado, a UNICEF spokesperson, said the most urgent risks to children are those related to safe water and malnutrition, with malnutrition rates in the affected areas already found to be high before the floods began.
