There are hundreds of people in the U.S. who build and fly their own planes using equipment and parts purchased at their local hardware or pilot store. Anyone with the determination and patience to learn a few technical design skills can do it. Its a tradition that began in 1928, when Bernard Pietenpol, a farmer who had only an 8th grade education, decided to build an everymans plane. He used scavenged and hardware-store materials to create a plane whose design can still be used today. Many people have since come up with their own designs, and new computer programs enable anyone to easily do the same. Here are the basic steps you need to take to build your own plane.
